The Flow of Life: A Family Systems Perspective on Transitions and Closure

Families who are anticipating the death of a loved one often experience an array of intense emotions. This can be one of the most stressful and also the most sacred of times the family will ever encounter. A family systems perspective on loss means the following:
1. Loss is a family issue.
2. The family is a system of interconnected parts. Any change in any part of the system affects the whole system.
3. A family systems perspective also means that we view the family as being interconnected to the collective memory of all who have passed before them in the generational history of the family.
4. A terminal diagnosis (or simply the aging and decline of an elderly family member), can unmask the issue of loss within the family and can set off the process of what we call "anticipatory mourning".
5. A family systems perspective can be perceived as a more efficient perspective within a time-limited framework if it is utilized toward the containment of energy and emotion associated with anticipatory mourning, through deliberate and intentional closure work. Ideally, this begins with a family meeting and ends with a "celebration of life". Family members and friends are invited as full participants in closure work by planning and preparing for the "Flow of Life" honoring ceremony. It truly is a celebration of life, the life of the individual being honored, as well as the family as a whole. And it is a grateful celebration and re-telling of how "Grace" has been with the family through time and and has brought them to this moment and will lead them on into the future.
