Therapy can help. Studies show that talk therapy (with a qualified and seasoned professional) can alleviate a number of emotional and even physical problems, including chronic pain.

ABOUT MY THERAPY PRACTICE:
Understandably, most people who seek Counseling Therapy are a bit nervous (or a LOT nervous) about what they're getting into, with someone they don't even know as a therapist. It helps if someone else you trust has referred you, but some people find my practice in the phone book or online. I've worked hard on this website to clarify the many options for therapy, thereby letting you know something of how I work with people in therapy. Please scroll around this page for more information and resources, but here are a few points about myself:

  • I meet each person, or couple, as they are right now.
  • I do not believe it is my job to judge anyone. All are welcome.
  • HOWEVER, there are a few expectations/standards for behavior in the office.
    Anyone who arrives for an appointment under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be immediately dismissed, with no discussion.
  • I have years and years of experience and can usually detect what is "going on" with the issue/s quickly and so therapy often moves forward quickly.
  • I try hard to make my office safe, comfortable, confidential, and inviting.
  • I have a huge range of therapy interventions and I pull them together after getting to know YOU. I am a certified Hypnotherapist,
    use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as part of almost every intervention, am trained and experienced in EMDR for trauma resolution, have years of experience with bereavement, am a skilled couples therapist, etc. More than anything, I am convinced that every person has within him/herself the ability to be naturally well and happy - far beyond what most people imagine for themselves until they begin a full immersion in therapy.

How long are the sessions?
Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes.
Do you have evening appointments?
Yes, Anne Milligan sees clients typically three evenings a week with 7:00 being the last scheduled time.
Do you see couples?
Yes, approximately 50-60% of Anne Milligan's clients are couples, in all stages and types of relationships.
What kind of experience do you have?
Anne Milligan
has been seeing clients for 22 years.
How much does it cost?
Out of pocket fee is $90 per session and there is a sliding scale.

Can I use insurance? 
Yes, Anne Milligan does accept most insurances but not all of them. Call the office to find out if you can use your insurance.
Does therapy work?
Yes, people do get better in therapy. The improvement is not always what people expected at first, however. Change can be a challenge for we human beings, but if you give it a chance, you will most likely find that the change was needed anyway and you are better for it, and happier too.
What do I need to do to get the insurance company to pay for therapy?
Call the customer service number on the back of your card. You will need to find out the following information:
Do you have an outstanding deductible that applies to this policy? If you do have a deductible, you will pay Anne Milligan's  contracted rate with that insurance company each time you come to therapy. We will send a claim to the insurance company and they will apply the payment to your deductible until it is met.
Find out how much your copay is for therapy.
Obtain a prior authorization number if it is required by the insurance company.
Ask if you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefit, Some employers buy into an EAP program that allows a certain number of free sessions. EAP always requires an authorization number

Do you accept credit card payments? No at this time, Anne Milligan only accepts payment by cash or check.

I've never been to therapy before. How does therapy usually work? What do I do and what do you do?
This is a very common question for people new to therapy.  Your first session is most often an assessment session. That is the time when the therapist finds out about you and helps you formulate what the problem is and what your goals are. Through the assessment and talking to you about your life, the therapist can give you a perspective that you might have missed, having lived with yourself 24/7 all this time! It is also often a venting time for the client because he/she has usually been holding things inside  for a while and needs to release emotions.  Couples have a chance to tell their story in the presence of someone objective. Some preliminary goals are set in the first sessions and the therapist often sends the client/s off with something to do right away to help further his/her goals. A next session is set up if necessary. If the therapist needs to refer the client onto another specialist, the proper consent paperwork is signed and a referral is made.
